Shane’s research paper, “Multifunctional Reactive Nanocomposites via Direct Ink Writing” was published in Advanced Materials Technologies and made available online. This work was completed in collaboration with The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory with assitance from Prof. Jennifer Lewis’ group at Harvard, and is the first demonstration of 3D printed reactive materials which produce a useful, stable product phase after reaction. Shane et al published “Environmentally Friendly Chemical Time Delays Based on Interrupted Reaction of Reactive Nanolaminates” in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. The article describes and characterizes a new method to create chemical time delays – devices that burn over a specific time period to ignite other pyrotechnic devices – which does not involve any of the environmentally hazardous materials typically employed for that purpose.
